Anyone that checks this regularly would notice it has been quite stagnant in the past month.

The past month has been spent having some time away from bodyboarding, spending some quality time with my amazing girlfriend, catching up with great mates and getting ready for the next phase of my life. Ive never been so happy!

Life is about to get a whole lot busier for myself and i cant wait to see how it pans out!

Ive been tossing up whether to stop this blog in the past few weeks and ive finally reached the decision to make this the final post. Ive had so much fun doing this the past few years, but i think its been a blog focused 99% around bodyboarding. Id like to move onto bigger and better things, be inspired by something new. Unfortunately at this point in time the thought of shooting the sport has become stagnated to myself, mainly due to my two favorite riders to work with riding for a company owned by a morally bankrupt person.

I have some future plans in the works and hopefully some extra time out will reignite the stoke!

In the meantime, keep checking my Facebook (become a fan!!!) for updates on a new website and maybe a new blog down the track.

I still have so much love for these things. Time for the next chapter.

I got the call on Saturday about a good swell for a certain Australian State. Some very limited spare coin, free time and a few years of desire to see this place made it a easy decision. Tickets were booked and we flew out from Brisbane Airport that night. On arrival Nick Rubesaame and myself met up with South Coast legend Matt Young. It was a big 4 days, but was without doubt one of the most enjoyable and relaxing trips ive been on. And we also scored super fun waves!!

Thanks to Nick and Matt for a great 4 days.

First of all, I love my job. Getting the opportunity to take photos of my good friends in an environment that very few are lucky enough to witness could be called payment in itself………

Unfortunately this form of payment doesn’t help with providing food to eat, gear upgrades, mobile phones, petrol and maintenance of the automobile and internet bandwidth for sending off files and following weather. This isn’t even taking into account the time spent learning the skill, hours working and the dangerous situations every surf photographer faces at some stage. I don’t want to put negative spin on this at the moment; I take photos because I absolutely love it. I enjoy seeing my good friends getting the exposure they well and truly deserve.

I was lucky enough to grow up in a time before the digital onslaught, when every man and dog didn’t possess a camera that could shoot 8 frames a second, a good autofocus system, USB cord and a email address. In these days my biggest influences such a Phil Gallagher, Tim Jones and others were able to make a living from it. These guys had a system, it may not have been perfect, but it worked. This resulted in us being lucky enough to witness a abundance of amazing images from a variety of different countries. This inspiration is what led me into the industry.

Today there are still photographers battling away trying to make a living. Unfortunately the industry of today is very different. We as photographers and aspiring photographers are lucky enough to have three beautiful bodyboarding magazines in Le Boogie, Movement and Riptide to exhibit our most prized recent work. But the magazines are not where the heart of the problem lies. Because magazines have there own set rates, there is order and control throughout the selection and editing process of the submitted work,. The bulk of income for a Surf/ Bodyboard photographer has always come from advertising work. We as experienced photographers try to keep a set of universal rates to base any quote to a client from. Without these rates then we start seeing full page and double page adverts getting sold for $200 or a board and pair of fins. I highly doubt Mr Gallagher’s wife would be too impressed if he came home and lumped a brand new bodyboard on the table for dinner that night!

The purpose of this article is to educate. If you’re a young photographer and a worldwide company approaches you and offers you a free board in exchange for your hard work, say NO! The temptation will always be there to say yes; exposure, seeing your work in print, future contacts etc etc ect, whatever you want to tell yourself. I can guarantee that before the said company has approached you, they would have approached a more experience photographer with the same offer that was most likely laughed at and turned down. But just be warned, if decide you sell a photo to one of these companies for a free bodyboard or some form of clothing, the next time around they will offer you even less. If you do accept the offer put forward, please know that as a consequence of your actions the guys you have sought inspiration from in the past have been bent over and screwed as a result of your deal.

Ive had a lot of frustrating and hard times in my few years spent in this industry, but probably my most gutting one happened today, ill try to explain the best I can without naming names. I am fortunate enough to have a good friend that is rapidly climbing the ranks to the elite group of Australia’s Bodyboarders. Over the past few years he has shown amazing persistence and hard work ethic to chase his dream. I’ve been spending the same amount of time and countless dollars following him overseas and roaming the countryside. The past week has seen me negotiating with his major sponsor for a new double page advert in future magazines. I was offered the usual product in exchange for use of the image and politely declined, all the while keeping up negotiation with the client. Today I received news that a said friend received the same offer of a free bodyboard and jumped at the deal. This person is the perfect example of what is wrong in the Bodyboarding today. Not only have I lost out on all the hard work from the previous few months, the rider is also let down by receiving a advert that does not truly reflect the hard work and commitment he has put in. In this case there are no excuses, the said person has been floating around in this industry for the past few years, just not very successfully.

If ANY young photographer out there wants to know more about the industry or would like a copy of rates to base their own off, please get in contact with me. I’m always happy to lend a hand.

Three sessions. Three Photos.

Ive had a really lucky couple of days with waves. The boys have all be surfing amazing. In particular Drew Innocend, Riggas, Rubesaame and Lachie Cramsie.

I really dont have much I can share at the moment, but here is a small tease.

Issue 33 of Movement features one of my personal favorite shots. Not only is it of my adopted little brother Alex Jackson, but we manged to snag the double page literally 30m from the door of his house where he has spent his entire life. Anyone who knows Shelly Beach would realise its not the ideal place to score a runable photo, so alot of planning had to go into achieving the shot we were after. Alex deserves huge credit for working hard with me to get this result.

This is Alex second consecutive shot in the magazines, and he has more coming up in future issues. He seems to be doing as much as anyone in the dropknee industry to push the sport at the moment. Id love to know when exactly a company will start throwing some actual money at the kid, a few free boards and t-shirts dont get you very far when travelling.

Over the previous 4 weeks ive been a perfect example of number one.

Healing foot infections, back to back flus and purposely forgetting to set my alarm.

Thursday night was spent aimlessly driving south of the Queensland border accompanied by Alex Jackson, Lee Bendall and Daniel 'Male Model/ Stickers' Jordan. At some hour of the night we managed to get severely lost and our journey came to a abrupt halt at a rockwall. When the morning broke we found that by some mere luck we had discovered one of New South Wales last secret surfing Mecca's, a flawless right hand wedge positioned besides a rivermouth and breakwall. After some beautiful surfing and photographs, I was informed by a local scientist that i must be suffering from bad memory, which is a shame for someone of such a young age. It may have been the distraction of him drooling when he talked or the lopsided eyes he possessed, but i was completely confused. I replied "please explain sir". He politely told me to fuck off with my camera. I probably should have done the kind thing and informed him that in fact Kevin Rudd is now the Australian prime minister, not John Curtain (1941-1945). Also the colour television was invented in 1954.

After a substantial post surf meal, we returned to the wall for session number two. The surf was slightly onshore, but the boys were still straight out there. A fun two hours later we returned to the car to find another local scientist had demonstrated his mechanical, numerical and valve pushing abilities by letting down one of our tyres. Little did the poor man know that in this modern day and age, a good car comes complete with four tyres and a spare in the boot. After 5 minutes delay we were on the road again.

It took hours of navigation behind the wheel, a chance encounter with James Adams, Leif Emberg, Michael Jennings, Max Arnt, Matt Lackey, and Jacob Hein who all by chance had managed to find this secret surfing paradise, but eventually we managed to find our way back to the highway and with that, civilisation. Once again id like to thank the locals for their kind welcoming and warm hospitality.

Today was day two of the pipe comp, the officials decided to hold the comp in shocking conditions. After a amazing performance up until round 5, Drew Innocend came unstuck due to some very dodgy tactics by a Hawaiian competitor. Standouts for the day were Joe Clarke, Sam Bennett &Jake Stone, with some flawless heats. Head to FLUIDZONE tomorrow morning at around 4.00AM Queensland time to cheer on all the boys.

Waves wernt the best today, but still some sick ones. Massive congrats to Joey Orme (the only 16 year old in the comp) who made it through into the second round, and was narrowly beaten by Drew Innocend and Simon Ormerod in round 2.

Standout of the day goes to Drew Innocend who won all of his heats and scored the only 10 of the day. Drew has had a standout season over here this year and its well and truly deserved!
